Synchrophasatron – Dubna – Great Russia.

I have visited Dubna JINR (Joint Institute for Nuclear Resaerch last May) for three week Summer School. While my visit i was facinated with a great machine that was built more than 50 years ago. This great machine is the Synchrophasotron.

Synchrophasotron – an accelerator built in Dubna were developed at the P.N.Lebedev Institute under the leadership of V.I.Veksler in 1949-1950. The Synchrophasotron was put into operation in April, 1957. The world largest accelerator at that time, it accelerated protons to the energy 10 GeV. What makes this accelerator unique is that it uses 36000 tons of magnets to confine accelerated beam. The experiments were aimed, first of all, at the investigation of elastic scattering at the lowest and the highest momentum transfer.

Here is a picture of Synchrophasatron from English Russia as i was a bad photographer and more pictures can be found at the link of english Russia.
